Rebecca Roberts' new book for an English language audience

Honno is excited to announce the signing of Rebecca Roberts’ latest novel, The Rituals. Following the story of celebrant Gwawr, Roberts weaves a narrative that explores themes of love, loss and trust as Gwawr performs naming ceremonies, weddings and funerals in her community.

When suspicion is cast upon Gwawr’s professionalism, the community turns against her and Gwawr must confront a future of foodbanks and isolation, all whilst repressing her own secret grief. With the help of friends and an unexpected romance, Gwawr begins to rebuild her life, but disaster threatens to strike again, with an unknown enemy intent on destroying her.

The Rituals, is a powerful and emotional story that tackles difficult issues, such as child mortality, death and depression, whilst simultaneously providing readers with hope and uplifting optimism. Roberts draws from her own experience as a celebrant to create a community rich with character and scenes on honest, raw humanity.

The Rituals is an English translation of the highly praised Welsh language novel Y Defodau.

"Relatable, honest and tender. Reading this felt like a much needed catch-up with a good friend.'' Rebecca Parfitt - Commissioning Editor, Honno.
