Call for Submissions – Essays on Africa and Asia in Wales
This volume will highlight the voices of immigrant women from Africa and Asia who have settled in Wales. We would love to hear their stories of the circumstances under which they left their home countries and decided to settle in Wales, how difficult or easy the transition has been, physically, emotionally and culturally and what occupation or activity they are involved in now in their new lives.
The General Assembly of the United Nations has declared 2015-2024 as the International Decade for People of African Descent. We, at Honno have decided to narrow and broaden this concept – narrow it, with regards to limiting it to women and broaden it in terms of including women of African and Asian descent. It is native as well as immigrant people, cultures, customs, traditions and ways of thinking that make a society vibrant, rich and whole and all voices should be included in order to realise this aim. It is therefore important to include all voices, but in particular the voices of women, which through the centuries have always been some of those most marginalised.
If you’ve a story to tell, then we’d like to read it – we are happy to consider pieces from 1000-5000 words in total. We’d also be interested in considering photo essays. We want to bring to the fore, the voices of immigrant women from Africa and Asia who have settled in Wales. This might include women who have moved to Wales as part of a life choice as well as those who have had to come to Wales after being displaced from their home countries on account of war or turbulent political conditions. We believe that all women have stories to tell and in this volume, we wish to highlight the voices of women whose first home is not Wales. How difficult or easy has the transition been both in physical terms as well as emotional and cultural terms? How welcome do you feel in your new home? Are you involved in any particular occupation or activity since you have moved to Wales? We would love to hear your story.
The Honno Voices imprint gives voice to Welsh women from all walks of life and who speak both or either language(s) – though the titles are published in English. It has published experiences of women from the 1900s to the present day, of women born and bred in Wales to those who have moved here and changed their lives.
